Pitlochry is surrounded by hills and both the walking and shopping in the town are excellent. The cultural highlight is the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, held in the Festival Theatre across the River Tummel and accessible by an interesting suspension bridge. Another, very unusual, attraction in Pitlochry is its very own dam, which was built across the River Tummel to create Loch Faskally with a "fish ladder" that allows salmon to make their way upstream to spawn. Visitors can actually see the fish making this supreme effort at the right time of the year through glass walls in the ladder.
Private small hotels can (though not as a rule!) be the best and most exclusive accommodation to be found anywhere in Britain and are often to be found in converted country houses in the most beautiful gardens or on mini-estates. They can usually be booked on a full-board or Bed and Breakfast basis but expect tariffs to be at the more expensive end of the market. Learn more about accommodation types
