About

About the House:

Situated on a quiet road in the centre of Aberfeldy, a small market town on the banks of the River Tay, Fernbank is a Victorian property once home to the Earl of Breadalbane. The building was refurbished in 2017 to retain its Victorian history while ensuring all modern comforts. The property consists of 7 bedrooms over two floors, each sleeping up to 2 guests. Bedrooms vary in size and arrangement, with a superking superior suite, standard doubles, and twin rooms available with flexible configurations to accommodate singles, friends, families, couples, and mixed groups. The rooms are tastefully designed for ultimate comfort with crisp cotton linen and modern ensuite bathrooms. Five of the seven ensuites include baths – perfect for relaxing aching muscles after a long walk in the surrounding woods or mountains.

Each room contains select works by local artist Mary Ann Reeves (guests have the option to purchase their favourite pieces as prints downstairs) with oil paintings by local Lindsay Plunkett also brightening the walls. A highlight of the guesthouse is our striking stained-glass window – a wonderful piece of artwork depicting a Highland Scottish stag. Our dining room is a lively space with a warm, open atmosphere – breakfast is always an occasion! All meals are prepared by hand with fresh local produce. Evening meals are occasionally available, with catering for retreats. Packed lunches (ideal for a day of exploring) are also available upon request: our packed lunches include homemade deep-filled sandwiches with a selection of fillings to choose from, including locally sourced cheese, ham, beef, and turkey; a piece of fruit; water; crisps; and a home-baked treat.

We have our own little yoga studio which can be booked for 1-2-1 classes or small groups (a room off the town hall, 3 minutes’ walk from Fernbank, is available for larger group hire). Our hallway library of books, DVDs, toys, and games will ensure you don’t get bored on rainy evenings, and we also have a lovely garden to the rear with a sauna, both of which you are very welcome to use.

The Local Area:

We are located in a beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands, the perfect place to spend time in nature and recharge. The town itself has a lot to offer – there is no shortage of pubs, restaurants, cafes, and little shops to explore, in additional all the usual local amenities. For your culture-fix, you have the Birks Cinema, a community-run cinema only a few minutes down the road; Pitlochry Festival Theatre, home to plays, comedy, concerts, and ceilidhs; and the Scottish Crannog Centre, where you can learn about the lives of ancient Loch settlers. Local walks are amongst Scotland’s best and include The Birks of Aberfeldy, which was made famous by the poetry Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns (quotes are carved into the route so you enjoy the work of Scotland’s national bard as you walk) and Ben Lawyers Nature Reserve, a Munro (mountain) suited for hikers of varying abilities. We can arrange walking guides to accompany you.

Closest to home you have the Tay, Scotland’s longest and most powerful river, which Fernbank backs onto. A couple minute’s stroll will take you to its shores where you can enjoy an easy stroll down the riverside path. Further afield you have numerous options; Perthshire is excellently situated in the heart of Scotland, serving as a key to both the central belt and the Highlands. Easily accessible are two famous national parks: the Cairngorms to the North and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs to the south, at the western head of Loch Tay.

Retreats:

A qualified teacher, Tina organises yoga retreats at Fernbank once a month, often collaborating with other experts including outdoor adventure instructor Chris Wain, author Linda Cracknell, and popular nutritionist Amanda Hamilton to create unique and enriching experiences. Read more about retreats at Fernbank here.
