Ullapool itself is a small highland coastal town with the usual pubs, restaurants and accommodation but its activities are mostly of an outdoor variety and the ferry port to Stornoway. The gem of the region is the penninsula of Achiltibuie with its miles of mostly deserted sandy beaches and virtually nowhere that would be unsafe for children to go feral. Here you find the famous Stac Polly mountain and the fabulous Summer Isles Hotel for those with the budget to afford fine dining. The falls of Measach are worth a visit and also taking the boat trips to the Summer Isles for wildlife watching.
Private small hotels can (though not as a rule!) be the best and most exclusive accommodation to be found anywhere in Britain and are often to be found in converted country houses in the most beautiful gardens or on mini-estates. They can usually be booked on a full-board or Bed and Breakfast basis but expect tariffs to be at the more expensive end of the market. Learn more about accommodation types
