Further east is the East End, a traditional working-class stronghold, and to the north is the oldest part of Glasgow, around the medieval cathedral. West of George Square is Buchanan Street, Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street the city's principal shopping thoroughfares. From here the streets rise towards Blythswood Square, a much quieter area of elegant late Georgian buildings turned into offices. Beyond Charing Cross is the city's West End and home of some of the city's best museums.
Private small hotels can (though not as a rule!) be the best and most exclusive accommodation to be found anywhere in Britain and are often to be found in converted country houses in the most beautiful gardens or on mini-estates. They can usually be booked on a full-board or Bed and Breakfast basis but expect tariffs to be at the more expensive end of the market. Learn more about accommodation types
