Loch Hourn and Barisdale Bay

Knoydart is a rugged, isolated peninsula of some 40,000 acres in west Lochaber. Situated between Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn and looking out west towards the southern part of Skye and Small Isles, most of the peninsula is a designated National Scenic Area. Home to some 120 people, the main centre of habitation is in Inverie. Isolated from the road network, access is on foot or by boat; there is regular public ferry service between Mallaig and Inverie. With three Munros, several Corbetts, and a beautiful coastline, Knoydart is popular with walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and sailors. The land is divided between several estates. The main part is managed by the community run Knoydart Foundation who provide a ranger service, bunkhouse and shop. Facilities in Inverie include a community shop, tea room, pub, and several guest houses.

  • Hill Walking

Knoydart is part of mainland Scotland but is not accessible by road. Effectively an island it has some of Scotlands finest peaks. Access by boat is possible from Mallaig. However the hillwalking in Knoydart is well worth the effort to get there as there are a variety of walks from mountains tops to beautiful coastal paths and drovers tracks. The finest walk on Knoydart is to Ladhar Bheinn and Coire Dhorrcail, but there are many others including Sgurr na Ciche, Meall Buidhe, and Luinne Bheinn, all Munroes (over 3000ft). Or the tracks and pony paths of Mam Barisdale, Mam Li and Glen Meadail, as well as the little known track to the remains of an old mica mine, high above the shores of Loch Nevis.
