West Lothian is one of the Scotland's 32 council areas and a lieutenancy area. West Lothian borders Edinburgh's city to the east, the Scottish Borders and South Lanarkshire to the south, North Lanarkshire and Falkirk to the west.
West Lothian was once a county in Scotland and was sometimes called Linlithgowshire, after the main town.
With an area of 427 km², West Lothian is the 20th largest administrative division and the 10th largest population.

Things to do in West Lothian
Linlithgow Palace is a former royal residence in Scotland located at Linlithgow, West Lothian, about 25 km west of Edinburgh. Partly destroyed in the 18th century during the war between the Stuarts and the Duke of Cumberland's supporters, it is now one of Britain's national monuments.
Midhope Castle is a tower house dating from the 16th century. It is located in Scotland, in the village of Abercorn about 4 kilometers west of South Queensferry, on Edinburgh's outskirts, and belongs to the estate of Hopetoun House. The house is a Grade A listed building.
