Crinan Canal
Although the Crinan Canal is only nine miles long it is wonderfully picturesque throughout and is recommended for boating and for walking on the good tow-path beside. It is another Victorian masterpiece from the days before trains and roads solved transport problems. It runs between Ardrishaig (just south of Lochgilphead) on Loch Fyne and Crinan, which leads out to the Inner Hebridean Islands and the Atlantic, and was built to avoid shipping having to make the journey round the Mull of Kintyre. It is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm 7 days a week in the summer but closed at weekends in the winter.
