Uig Sands

Islands

About

It is one of the most unusual sights in Britain, with large stretches of flat sand surrounded by dunes. The beach is best reached from the south and is the symbol of Ardroil Beach.

On the way to the beach,  you will pass a magnificent wooden statue of a chessman. It celebrates the discovery of the famous Uig chess piece near here in 1831. Most of the 78 works, carved in Norway in the 12th century, are from walrus ivory and can be seen in the British Museum and the Scottish Museum.

From the statue, there is a path leading through the dunes to the beach outside.
