John Muir, a naturalist, and conservationist were born at 126 High Street on April 21, 1838. He was Daniel Muir's third child with his second wife, Ann Gilrye Muir. The house is described as a "three-story stone building" in the "best business district in town." His father also ran a successful grain and food store in the building, which he inherited when his first wife died.
The building's exterior has been restored and now looks like it did in 1838 (the year John Muir was born). Inside, you will find family-friendly interactive displays on three floors, as well as warm and friendly reception staff, who are always knowledgeable staff ready to answer questions. The museum shop contains maps, guides, and other helpful information on John Muir Way. It also offers John Muir and selected books related to it and a nature-themed gift shop with things for all ages.
