Colonsay House Gardens has an unusual trees and shrubs sourced from all over the world from the 1930's. These include crinodendrons, eucalypts and the dramatic flame red embothrium. Giant magnolias and gunnera flank the pond and numerous cordylines intersperse with the brilliant orange bark of myrtles to give a subtropical feel. In spring, paths are lined with Himalayan primulas, bluebells and other wild flowers. The walled gardens with their rolling lawns have a more formal feel. A wonderful Dicksonia antartica stands among lomatia, crinodendrons and camellias. Abutilons, olearias and, later in the year, eucryphias, flower
profusely alongside enormous Monterey cypresses. A focal point is the Lighthouse Garden, featuring the Fresnel lens from Islay. Teas and home baking are available. The cafe serves lunches and teas with home baking

I have selected the properties on Private House Stays for their individuality that results from being privately owned. They take many forms from bed and breakfasts to small hotels but in each case it is the marque of the owner that sets it apart. This may be the charm of the furnishings, the wholesome home cooking or simply the atmosphere created by a charismatic host. I have inspected most of the establishments listed here and feel sure you will enjoy staying in them too.
Remember - booking through Private House Stays is free of charge.
