Housed in the small village of Craigellachie and located on the Malt Whisky Trail, the Speyside Cooperage is unique within Britain due to it being the sole cooperage with a visitor centre. The profession of a cooper, someone who specialises in the construction of barrels, vats or casks, is one that stretches back to Ancient Egypt, but which is still practiced to this very day. Opened in 1947, the Speyside Cooperage produces and repairs 150,000 casks every year, many of which are put to use in the neighbouring Speyside distilleries, as well as distilleries located not just in Scotland but across the globe. Visitors can witness the coopers’ fine craftsmanship first-hand or even have a go themselves with the mini casks, perhaps ending their visit with a coffee in the café or an excursion to the gift shop. Visits to the cooperage must be booked in advance, either over the phone or via email.
