Newhailes

Newhailes is an unrestored National Trust for Scotland stately home that occupies virtually the only undeveloped land between Edinburgh and Musselburgh. It has been deliberately left as a sort of time capsule from when the last of the line, Sir Mark Dalrymple died without heirs in 1971, although his widow, Lady Antonia, continued to live at Newhailes until it was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in 1997. There are parts that are decidedly tatty and items of ordinariness lying around but it has a lived-in feel and many rooms that are greatly impressive. Today's visitor to Newhailes begins at the visitor centre in what used to be the stable block from where guided tours start, and here you will also find a shop and coffee house. The park that surrounds the house is also delightful with its views over the Firth of Forth and down the coast to Aberlady Bay. Opening times Estate: all year, daily, car park closing at dusk. Visitor Centre, Shop and Cafe: 22 Apr to 30 Sep, Thur-Mon 11-5. House: 22 Apr to 30 Sep, Thurs-Mon 12-5 Tours last approx 1¼ hours, starting every 30 mins from Visitor Centre. First tour departs 12 noon; last tour departs 4pm. Please allow 15 mins prior to tour departure to collect tickets and view introductory film.
