Ardvreck Castle

Kylesku

About

On the Shores of Loch Assynt lies the ruins of Ardvreck Castle; this fascinating ruin was once The ancestral home of the Macleods of Assynt; it was constructed in 1590 and replaced Assynt Castle their previous home. Clan Mackenzie took over the castle in 1672, and the Assynt lands around it and with their rule, the end was near for Ardvreck Castle, as they tore down parts of it and recycled the stone into the nearby Calda House, leaving what remains of the castle a ruin. Today the ruins still stand in one of the most beautiful places in Scotland, with the sapphire blue Loch Assynt on one side and the mountains of Sutherland on the other. It makes for a brilliant picnic spot on a sunny day and has on-site parking only a short walk away, and is ideally located near Kylesku on the North Coast 500.
