Neptunes Staircase

Great Glen Way

Neptune’s Steps are located in the shadow of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, with a dramatic flight of eight locks on the Caledonian Canal. Located in the picturesque village of Banavie north of Fort William, this stunning engineering feat raised the canal by 19m (62 feet) in a quarter mile of continuous masonry, and it took approximately 90 minutes for the boats to get on and off lock.

This was built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822 and is the longest stair lock flight in Scotland. This is an ideal location to enjoy some "gongoozling" boats while flying locked, and a concentration point-the West Highland train line traverses the canal at the bottom of Neptune's stairs. Many historical buildings, including some former locked houses, are now carefully restored as luxurious holiday accommodations and are also spread across banks.
