Glenfinnan Monument & Viaduct

Glenfinnan is a village in the Lochaber district of the Scottish Highlands. It is situated at the northern end of Loch Shiel, at the foot of Glen Finnan.

The Glenfinnan Monument, erected in 1815 at the head of Loch Shiel, marks the spot where Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) raised his standard at the start of the Jacobite rebellions in 1745.
The viaduct was constructed between 1897 and 1901 by the engineer Sir Robert McAlpine. Twenty-one arches are extended and 30 meters high. The viaduct was made famous in the second Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, where the Jacobite steam train was transformed into the Hogwarts Express - was filmed crossing the viaduct. This shot was repeated several times in subsequent films.
The viaduct also appears in the film Ring of Bright Water (1969), where the lead actor, Bill Travers, is filmed crossing it.
