Ben Macdui

Aberdeenshire

About

Situated on the southern edge of the Cairngorm Plateau, Ben Macdui lies on the boundary between the historic counties of Banffshire and Aberdeenshire.

Of note, Queen Victoria hiked to the top of Ben Macdui in 1859. She recorded her experience of the mountain as 'sublime and solemn' and complimented the landscape's wild, solitary nature.

The easiest route of ascent begins at the Coire Cas car park, located at the foot of Cairngorm Ski Centre. A path leads up over the moorland, which slowly rises. This route is about 4 miles (7km) long.

The terrain can be tricky - it is very exposed and can be challenging to navigate. For this reason, Ben Macdui is best climbed in summer.
