The gardens are at the western side of the A815 way from Dunoon, among Holy Loch and Loch Eck, and include footbridges across the River Eachaig. It is one of the sites of the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh.
It includes an avenue of giant redwoods planted in 1863, extensive square walled gardens, a waterfall, fern, ponds, and hillside walks overlooking Holy Loch. There is a café at the entrance and a shop. The garden is located in Argyll Forest Park, part of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.
