About

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland was built in 1909 by Edinburgh lawyer Thomas Gillespie. He is a visionary and nature lover, and In just four years, he has received enough support and funds to enable the Institute to purchase an 85-acre piece of land west of Edinburgh for £17,000 with the help of Edinburgh City Council.
Edinburgh Zoo opened to the public on July 22, 1913, and was incorporated by the Royal Charter later that year. However, it was not until 1948 that His Royal Highness King George VI visited the Association that the Association had the privilege to add the prefix "Royal" to its name. It is still the only zoo in the UK with a Royal Charter. Today, Edinburgh Zoo has more than 1,000 animals.
