Mottes were common in Scotland in the 1100s and 1200s and were later replaced by stone castles. They are fortifications, usually composed of wooden castles on top of artificial mounds. Some also have enclosed courtyards or Baileys, which contain other wooden buildings and are protected by ditches and fences. From the 1100s to the 1700s, Duffus Castle was a fortress castle with more than 500 years. The current stone castle was built in the 1300s and replacing the earlier timber fort.
