Day cycling tour Hebrides

Cycling here in the Outer Hebrides on self-directed cycles, every twist in the road is breathtaking. At Westend B&B Isle of Lewis, we are a centrally situated base for curated day cycling tours. If you are carbon footprint aware, check public transport to Inverness, coach to Ullapool on the west coast of Scotland and the two-hour ferry trip to Stornoway in the Isle of Lewis with Calmac.

Westend B&B is in Achmore on the Isle of Lewis, 9 miles from Stornoway and 9 miles from the Callanish Stones. Cycle hire is available from The Hub, close to the ferry port in Stornoway, or a lift will take you to Westend, and your bike can be delivered to you the next day. Westend has kitchen facilities where you can make your supper at the end of a relaxing day, exploring what Hebrides offers.

There are several walks in Achmore and Westend. The cyclist's haven has everything you need for a stress-free cycle through the natural landscape to enjoy a variety of wildlife, deer, eagles, otters and many heritage attractions of antiquity.

You can select your day cycle from the list of ten routes depending on your interests. The Lochs district can be explored on the cycle tracks winding around the secluded sea lochs, brimming with wildlife while framing the extensive island moorland. The Westside of Lewis offers day trips to historical sites from the Neolithic Standing stones at Callanish, the reconstructed Iron Age Round House at Bosta sands Great Bernera, to the traditional thatched Hebridean houses at Garenin occupied until the 1970s.

Public transport options exist for areas outside a 35-mile radius of Westend B&B. A coach trip to the Isle of Harris, a chance to walk to Luskentyre Beach, and the coach back to the Isle of Lewis later in the day. Visit the promontory at Tiumpan Head, Point, one of the best places in Europe to go sea mammal spotting. Travel by bus to the Uig area, where the Vikings once had a base and walk on the beach where the 12th century Lewis Chessmen appeared out of a sandbank- you could be lucky.

The fresh air on the Isle of Lewis guarantees a good night's sleep. Breakfast is self-service, so your breakfast can be accessed before or after your cycle for a spur-of-the-moment spin to watch the sunrise create shadows at the Callanish Stones. There are options of meal packs for anyone with dietary requirements or a visit to the Keystore 6 miles away or Crust the pizza shack just 3 miles away. Meals can be enjoyed on the patio facing west, viewing the setting sun's red glow on the vista of moorland, hills and freshwater lochs.

At Westend, we have welcomed cyclists and walkers on the Hebridean Way for eight years and can cater to your equipment, meals, publications and local information requirements. We look forward to sharing our island with you.
