Mabie Forest

Galloway

About

Mabie Forest is a family destination with a wide variety of coniferous and deciduous trees. It has a vehicle park with facilities and a children's play area. The largest forest has a network of footpaths and is also one of the 7 Stages, one of 7 forests that offer world-class mountain biking. There are also various hiking and cycling trails of varying lengths and difficulties. It is home to red squirrels, badgers, roe deer, foxes, and bats. An area near Dalshinne Loch actively encourages engoulevents by creating open spaces amongst the scrub birch. The woodland also shelters over 20 of Scotland's 32 resident butterflies, including the rare pearl fritillary. Dead trees are left in the wood to feed a habitat for insects and their larvae, which in turn feed food for woodpeckers and bats, and there is a shelter on the edge of Loch Lochaber where you can see mute swans and great crested grebes and the occasional osprey in summer.
