About
Blackwaterfoot Lodge includes two self catering units - The Loft and Briggs Cottage, and the main building which is open during the summer season for B & B and evening meals for four days per week, Thursday through Monday morning. The main building may also be booked for longer periods, all year round, by larger groups (family reunions for example) on a self catering basis, with the added option of hiring our Son David who is a superb chef.
The Isle of Arran is a thumbnail image of the mainland. It encapsulates the geology, and thus the scenery, of the mainland in an island that is a mere 57 miles around, kidney shaped, about 25 miles long and 12 miles wide. It is therefore very user friendly: human scaled, and eminently accessible from Glasgow or Prestwick airport. It's the things it doesn't have that add to its attraction; no amusement arcades, for example, and you never have to pay to park your car.
Arran is never crowded. It is indeed an island of peace and tranquillity in extreme contrast to the traffic-clogged and post-industrial eyesores of the adjacent mainland. It is primarily an island destination for outdoor people; those who enjoy hill-walking, cycling, golf, horse-riding and other outdoor pursuits. Despite it’s size, it is big enough to absorb summer visitors without any strain on the infrastructure, big enough for solitary walkers to wander and wonder where everybody is, and big hearted enough to make visitors so much at home that they’ll be on first name terms with the locals almost as soon as they step ashore.
The Lodge is on the west coast and is named after the village in which it is situated: Blackwaterfoot. The west coast is more Hebredean in character than the east, just like the mainland, wilder and more windswept, some would say more interesting. The village straddles the Black Water burn that spills into the sea through the picturesque harbour. The water isn’t really black, it’s dark brown from the peat that it runs through, as are all the burns on Arran.
Summer visitors to Blackwaterfoot have guarded their secret well over the years; the regulars return year after year for the peace, the golf, the beach, the horse riding, knowing that the village is self-contained. What more do you need beyond a Post Office, a garage, a grocery shop, hairdresser, artisan bakery, newsagent – and a choice of drinking places? The local golf course is a 5-minute stroll from The Lodge. It's a links course among the top 100 courses in the UK. It has twelve holes only, a unique number these days, but apparently the Royal and Ancient started with 12 holes; so, three rounds for a competition 36-hole game. The course lies above the beach; each hole provides magnificent views across the sound of Kilbrannan to the Mull of Kintyre, or closer interesting geological features like Drumnadoon, basalt hexagonal columns like the Devil’s Causeway of Antrim, or Fingal’s cave and the cliffs of Iona. There are tennis courts and a bowling green adjacent to the clubhouse, all available to visitors.
We're a quiet restful sort of place, so we do not accept bookings from large groups such as stag or hen parties. Dogs are permitted but please check with the owners in advance and before booking. We ask guests to ensure their pets remain off the furniture and to provide appropriate bedding. Dogs must not be left unaccompanied.

Cancellation.
Cancellation: No penalty if you cancel with 1 months notice. If you cancel giving fewer than a months notice you will be liable for the full rate unless we are able to re-let : you might want to consider travel insurance to cover unexpected last-minute cancellation (disruption to ferry service, for example). Pets welcocme by prior arrangement (a small charge applies).
Check-in and check-out.
Check in between 4 and 6 pm, but earlier (provided room is ready) or later is fine but it helps if we know in advance. Check out time is 10am to allow time for thorough cleaning.
