A beautiful area of countryside that follows the river don from Aberdeen west in to the Cairngorms. Not quite as famous as Royal Deeside but just as beautiful and part of the Queen's Trail that is recognised as part of Queen Victoria's most favourite areas for walking and touring. The focus town for the area is Alford which houses the Grampian Transport Museum, Haughton Country Park and the Alford valley railway. The Lonach gathering highland games are a major attraction on the 4th Saturday of every August.
There are two reasonable museums in Alford worth visiting:
There are three ancient castles within the Donside area that Private House Stays recommends for your consideration: Craigievar Castle, Corgarff Castle and Kildrummy Castle which is more famous for its Gardens.
There are two attractions that Private House Stays recommended that are suitable for entertaining children within the Donside area. The first is actually on the Dee but not far from Donside: Howie Irvine Deeside Activity Park. The other is the Alford valley railway.
