Mull and Iona

The waterfront

Mull is the second largest of the Inner Hebridean islands. The main ferry port is at Craignure in the South-east corner of the island which is approached past the spectacular headland of the ruins of Duart Castle. In the summer you can catch the Mull narrow railway to Toronsay Castle and gardens. The North of the island is the home of the delightful town of Tobermory (the setting for the BBC children's show Balamory) and the South-west corner of the island is the gateway to the famous and holy island of Iona and Fingal's cave. There is an enthusiastic car rally event held in October.

Nearby Areas:

  • Beauty Spots

Mull and Iona are both stunningly beautiful islands in general, so it would be a very subjective list to prioritise selected beauty spots over others, however the following places have been identified: Aros Park, The Calgary Art in Nature Woodland Sculpture Walk, The amazing Fingals Cave on Staffa island, The Burg and Treshnish

  • Museums and Art Galleries

There are 4 small museums in the Mull and Jura region: The Isle of Ulva Heritage Centre - The boathouse, Mull and Iona Folklore Museum in Tobermory, The Old Byre Heritage Centre in Dervaig and Sheilas Cottage on Ulva. We have identified one descent art gallery on Mull, The An Tobar Arts Centre with a link below

  • Ancient Castles

There are two spectacular castles on Mull. Duart in particular does evoke lasting memories if you remember to be out on deck just before getting in to dock at Craignure and Torosay has fantastic gardens and a narrow guage railway that children generally love.

  • Tourist Attractions

The world famous tourism destination is to make the pilgrimage to the Iona Abbey and nunnery. This is considered to be a very holy place in Christian culture but you do need to either find a coach trip to take you down to the South-west corner of Mull or else bring your own car. Then the ferry over to Iona does get somewhat weather affected and thus the sailing times are only semi-reliable. Other tourist attractions include: The Tobermory Distillery, The Macquarie Mausoleum which is the grave site of the man credited with founding the nation of Canada and The Edge of the World Rib Rides from Ulva Ferry.
