Nairnshire

Ross & Cromarty coastline

Nairnshire runs South from the Moray firth and is bordered by Inverness city to the west and Moray county to the East. Nairn city claims to have one of the lowest rainfalls anywhere in the UK and was the habitual summer holiday destination for Charlie Chaplin when he was alive.

Nearby Areas:

  • Beauty Spots

The North coast of Nairnshire, on the Moray Firth has some lovely views across to the Black Isle. The Nairn riverside walks and Culloden Forest Trails are recommended, as well as The Culbin Sands Nature reserve which is particularly good for its birdwatching. The gardens at Brodie and Cawdor castles are also identified. There are also two heritage sites at Clava Cairns and Boath Doocot.

  • Museums and Art Galleries

Private House Stays has identified 4 attractions that we recommend that are sort of Museum related. Findhorn is an eco-village that does have a museum but is an attraction for many different reasons: an attractive location on the Moray Firth, quirky architecture and a fascinating lifestyle for its dedicated residents. Closer to Inverness is Culloden battlfield which was a significant event in Scottish history. In addition there are the Falconer Museum and the Nairn fishertown museum.

  • Whisky

The area that Private House Stays defines as Nairnshire includes the North-west end of The Whisky Trail. This is a term that seems to be a marketing exercise to encourage tours visiting the huge amount of distilleries that are located between Aberdeen and Inverness, but it can be a ittle confusing because there are a number of small (but still famous) brands that only occasionally or by special arrangement welcome visitors to see round the distillery sites. In order to help tourists we list the distillery names below approximately grouped around the nearest towns with telephone numbers and websites for those that are most orientated around visitors: http://www.privatehousestays.com/blog/?p=1163

  • Ancient Castles

There are 4 Ancient Castles within the Nairnshire area that we recommend, the most spectacular of which is Fort George. This is quite some place and greatly recommended. It is linked below along with Castle Stuart and Cawdor Castle, and there is also the ruined Lochindorb Castle.
