On an island in the River Dee stands Threave Castle, a massive 14the century tower built by Archibald the Grim, Lord of Galloway. Later the stronghold of the Black Douglasses, it has at its base an artillery fortification built before 1455 when James II besieged the castle. Opening Times: Open summer only, seven days a week, 9.30am to last outward sailing at 4.30pm. Admission Prices:Adult £4, Conc £3.00,Child £2.00 (Ferry included)
