The Palace of Holyrood is the Queen's official residence in Scotland but is mainly used by the Queen for ceremonial purposes for one week at the end of June when garden parties are hosted and an investiture is held to recognise the achievements of people living in Scotland. About a quarter of the rooms in the Palace are open to the public to view the extensive memorabilia and decore, much of which dates back to the times of Mary Queen of Scots, but it is not an attraction that is greatly
thrilling for those other than the history buffs. There is a very nice modern cafe open throughout the year that can be used without paying the entry fee to the Palace itself.

I have selected the properties on Private House Stays for their individuality that results from being privately owned. They take many forms from bed and breakfasts to small hotels but in each case it is the marque of the owner that sets it apart. This may be the charm of the furnishings, the wholesome home cooking or simply the atmosphere created by a charismatic host. I have inspected most of the establishments listed here and feel sure you will enjoy staying in them too.
Remember - booking through Private House Stays is free of charge.
