The Museum of Lead Mining Centre, which was once the village \'Smiddy\' of the village of Wanlockhead has a walk-through exhibition which tells the story of how lead ore or \'galena\' was won at the face and the processes it went through to become the lead products that we know today. The museum is unique to Scotland as it is the only former lead mine open to the public where you can see displays of some of the most spectacular minerals found in the Lowther Hills

The Private House Stay's Guide

South Scotland

Much of the area South of the main population corridor between Glasgow and Edinburgh is good farmland that feels less of a strong Scottish identity than the rest of the country perhapes because much of the scenery lacks the same spectacular beauty associated with many of the more iconic areas. Nevertheless there is much to be found in the areas of Ayrshire, the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway due to being more accessible than areas further North.
