Castle Cruises on Loch Ness

Loch Ness

About

Join the "Cluaran Dubh" and its skipper Gordon for a trip lasting approximately one hour and enjoy stunning views of the Great Glen, Loch Ness and the ruins of Urquhart Castle. Onboard, instruments monitor sub surface activity showing both bottom profile and mid water targets, although usually fish are very occasionally much larger and not readily explained.
Gordon was born, raised and still lives on the shores of the Loch. He and his family have, for over 60 years, been involved in a great many of the projects which have taken place on and around the Loch since the 1950's. Its constantly changing moods and facets are a regular source of interest.
Pictures and anecdotes from activities such as John Cobb's ill-fated attempt on the water speed record, Wellington Bombers recovered from the depths, white witches casting spells to protect Nessie from cryptozoologists are interspersed with local history.
"Pisces" the prototype of a series of mini-submarines which came to Loch Ness in 1969 to carry out deepwater trials recorded the then greatest depth 975ft ever claimed for the Loch. Unfortunately, the measurement could not be repeated. Since then other "greatest known depths" have been recorded, but, as with Pisces further investigation has failed to substantiate them. These erroneous readings are likely due to the sonar pulses being "bounced" of the steep Loch walls and being received via the sidelobes.
