Athelstaneford is the birthplace of Scotland's national flag - the St Andrew's Cross or Saltire. Tradition has it that the flag, the oldest in Europe, originated in a battle fought close by the village in the dark ages. The date is believed to have been 832AD. Visitors to the Centre can enjoy a short audio-visual dramatisation of the battle above which the Saltire appeared in the sky and inspired the Scots to victory. Open daily between 9.00am and 6.00pm from April to September, and on St Andrews Day. Admission is free.

East Lothian
East Lothian stretches Eastwards out along the Firth of Forth to North Berwick (a beautiful sea-side town that was once very fashionable with the rich and famous). Wonderful and ancient Golf courses abound everywhere. The area is served by a regular train service from Edinburgh to North Berwick which is much recommended for those who value the wonderful air quality and beautiful views, while the famous Bass Rock (the best place in Scotland to see gannets), The Law (a volcanic outcrop that dominates the town) and Tantallon Castle are spectacular attractions.
