Elgin is situated in the area called the 'Laich of Moray'. Lying in the shelter of the Grampian mountains, this region is well known for its dry and sunny climate. Elgin Cathedral, known as the Lantern of the North, was founded in 1224, but destroyed by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, it is second in size in Scotland only to St Andrews cathedral. Step back in history while you are here. Within a few miles of Elgin you can visit Birnie Church (12th century), Pluscarden Abbey (13th century), Duffus Castle (14th century) and Spynie Palace (15th century). Splendid Ballindalloch Castle (just 23 miles away) dates from the 16th century and is open between Easter and September. We are conveniently situated for day trips to the famous Castle Trail and the distilleries on the Malt Whisky Trail. The Victorian Heritage Trail and Coastral Trail also offer popular touring itineraries. Heading towards Inverness, the castles of Cawdor and Brodie are both worth a visit, together with Culloden Battlefield and Fort George which give insights into Jacobite history and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The Private House Stay's Guide
Moray
Moray is the area that covers the area South of the Moray Firth between Aberdeenshire and Inverness City. It covers a good deal of the Northern part of the Whisky trail and includes the area of outstanding natural beauty that is found along the Spey valley. The main city within the area is Elgin with its famous and spectacular cathedral but the whole area is stunning and the Moray Firth coastline has a wild and inspiring atmosphere.
