The house itself stands in 40 acres of grassland and ancient oak woods which slope down in front of the house to Loch Ard where you can fish, swim or paddle. The Loch at this point is sandy and shelves very gently so is good for children. Boats can be hired in the village of Kinlochard half a mile away, where there is a well-stocked village shop and an award winning tea room, or take a picnic to Blairhullichan's private island, Eileen Gorm Blairhullichan lies within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park which has all the beauty and drama of the Highlands "in miniature". There is unlimited walking, and a miles of cycle tracks in the forested foothills of Ben Lomond which rise behind the house, The surrounding countryside is dotted with Neolithic habitations and evidence of people who once lived here: the fishing hut on Eilean Gorm, was once a chapel; the little island next door is
the remains of a 'crannog" - affectionately christened "Gorm-less" - by previous generations of the family. The area is also a haven for birdlife. The owners have counted 52 species of bird, including a pair of Osprey which can often be seen fishing on the Loch from the garden or sitting room window.

I have selected the properties on Private House Stays for their individuality that results from being privately owned. They take many forms from bed and breakfasts to small hotels but in each case it is the marque of the owner that sets it apart. This may be the charm of the furnishings, the wholesome home cooking or simply the atmosphere created by a charismatic host. I have inspected most of the establishments listed here and feel sure you will enjoy staying in them too.
Remember - booking through Private House Stays is free of charge.
