Royal Deeside is the area that runs West from Aberdeen along the river Dee to Braemar towards Glenshee that includes the 'Royal' town of Ballater and the Queen's summer residence at Balmoral Castle. The land is fertile and littered with rugged castle ruins and noble country houses with spectacular gardens and ancient standing stones. Many visitors come in the summer months to experience the Victorian Heritage Trail that visits Queen Victoria's favourite places. The scenery is breathtaking.
Private small hotels can (though not as a rule!) be the best and most exclusive accommodation to be found anywhere in Britain and are often to be found in converted country houses in the most beautiful gardens or on mini-estates. They can usually be booked on a full-board or Bed and Breakfast basis but expect tariffs to be at the more expensive end of the market. Learn more about accommodation types
